Purpose:

Deposit biology experimental plates of axenic cultures (algae and desert bacillus) and mixed communities from MDRS soil at the base of peak 518500mE 4251500mN at three different depths: surface, 10cm below surface, and 20cm below. Monitor the temperature at each depth using both an Infrared thermometer and probe thermometer.

Narrative:

Our away team crew of Commander Usha Lingappa, Navigator Danielle YoungSmith, scientist Nick Orenstein, and artist Ian Etter set out on our fourth EVA of the mission after Lingappa and YoungSmith made experimental plates containing algae and bacillus from Earth mixed with the isolated organisms from the MDRS soil.

About 30 minutes into the EVA, the team reached the sample deposit site and dug out holes for the plated samples--one at the soil surface, one 10 cm below the surface, and 20 cm as well. The dig was completed with nothing of significant note, and two plates were deposited into each hole and covered over loosely with soil before heading to the next spot. The team then headed east towards the rover road while collecting soil samples on the way for biology, engineering, as well as artistic projects.
