Commander's Report, 5 January 2014

Today we saw off Crew 132 in the early AM. They left us a clean, well-stocked Hab and spent their

last evening on Mars going over the daily maintenance tasks required to keep the station running

well. They also were a great source of tips and advice on how to live better and more productively

here. As a very successful crew they have set the bar high for us -- we appreciate the challenge!

Crew 133 did pre-sim training and orientation today with a basic ATV lesson followed by a walk to

the ridge above the Hab to get a better perspective on the surrounding terrain. Gordon and

Elizabeth started some seeds that will eventually be the initial inhabitants of the new hydroponics

tank. Matthieu made initial contact with the flight surgeon this morning. Gordon and I worked out

a schedule of cooking, cleaning, EVA, and major event/report due dates through the rotation with

feedback from the rest of the crew. With training, orientation and a schedule established we

entered sim tonight at 6PM with a stirring toast by Gordon.

Tomorrow we plan to build on the EVA suit introduction given to us by Crew 132 when I show the crew

how to help each other into the suits and go through proper EVA procedures and comms. We will then

do two short EVA to give each crew member a chance to step out onto Martian regolith for the first time.

Tomorrow Plan:

We will be starting sim tonight.

Tomorrow morning we will have EVA suit training: first, with in-Hab

instruction on how to put on suits and how to assist crew members with

suiting up, and second, with two short EVAs so that each crew member will

have an opportunity to put the training into practice.
