During her time working for the University of Houston at NASA Johnson Space Center, she has been awarded several group and individual achievement awards for her work on various mission-related and ground-based research projects.
Prior to landing her dream job at Johnson Space Center, Jamie served as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Medical Fitness Director at a regional hospital where she worked with patients and clients at every stage along the wellness continuum. Jamie also served as a Health & Physical Education faculty member for Darton State College, and currently serves as a science, health, and nutrition faculty member for the University of Phoenix.
As an active member of the spaceflight community and industry, Jamie also serves as the Exercise Science adviser to Mars One, CapCom for the Mars Society’s Mars Desert Research Station, and the Business Development Officer for Astronauts4Hire. Jamie was also selected as a Commercial Scientist-Astronaut Candidate in the 2013 Astronauts4Hire Commercial Astronaut Selection Campaign. Upon completion of a rigorous two-year astronaut training program, Jamie will be eligible to support commercial spaceflight missions as a Commercial Scientist Astronaut.
In late 2012, Jamie founded her own company, LAUNCH Fitness & Human Performance, a pioneering company that bridges the gap between the commercial spaceflight and aerospace medicine industries and the fitness industry. LAUNCH recently released a groundbreaking professional credential for fitness professionals interested in servicing the emerging commercial spaceflight and tourism industry, the Spaceflight Fitness Specialist. In addition to LAUNCH, in late 2013 Jamie founded her second company, IGNITE Health & Wellness, which offers quality, science-based continuing education and credentials on a variety of health, wellness, and performance-related topics.
Jamie holds a bachelor’s in Exercise Science/Wellness, a master’s degree in Health & Physical Education, a Master of Business Administration, and is currently completing a master’s in Health Science at the University of Alabama and a master’s of Aeronautical Science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Jamie will attend the University of Texas Medical Branch beginning fall 2014, where she will pursue a dual-degree program leading to a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences and a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). As a professional Exercise Scientist, she also holds several industry certifications including: Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength & Conditioning Association, Corrective Exercise Specialist and Performance Enhancement Specialist from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and is a Certified Functional Movement Specialist.
As an active professional in the fitness and human performance industry, Jamie also presents regularly at industry conferences and workshops across the U.S. Jamie’s business interests are evenly split between the emerging commercial spaceflight industry and the fitness industry where she specializes in business development and operations for start-ups and early phase businesses.
In her free time Jamie enjoys sailing, geocaching, strength training, outdoor recreation, and competitive martial arts.
Jamie Guined - CommanderJamie Guined currently serves as an Exercise Scientist with the University of Houston supporting research in the Exercise Physiology & Countermeasures Laboratory and the Neurosciences Laboratory at the NASA Johnson Space Center, a journey that has been fueled by a childhood dream of one day working at NASA to help further the human exploration of space. Jamie’s journey with the U.S. space program began as an undergraduate intern at the NASA Kennedy Space Center where she completed an Exercise Science internship in the Center’s Space Life Sciences division. Today, the focus of her research is to better understand how spaceflight produces changes in the muscular, neurovestibular, and cardiovascular systems, and the development of effective countermeasures and training programs that will facilitate adaptation and maintenance of crew health during long-duration spaceflight as well as recovery and re-adaptation post-flight. Jamie also conducts and supports physiologic, medical requirements, and human performance testing and research of International Space Station crew members and ground-based research subjects.
Avid Roman-Gonzalez - Executive Officer (XO)/Greenhab OfficerAvid Roman-Gonzalez was born in Sicuani - Perú, he is an Electronic Engineer, graduated from the San Antonio Abad University of Cusco (2000 - 2004), Systems Engineer from the Andina University of Cusco (2005 - 2008), received his Master's Degree in Industrial and Human Automatic, from the Paul Verlaine University of Metz - France (2008 - 2009), and he received his PhD Degree (2013) in Image and Signal Processing from TELECOM ParisTech supported by the French Space Agency (CNES - Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) and German Aerospace Center (DLR - Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt). His areas of interest are: Signal and image processing, biometrics, artificial intelligence, human automation, bioengineering, industrial automatic, control, aerospace technology, etc. His work experience includes University Teaching at the San Antonio Abad University of Cusco, performance as Engineer in: SPECTRUM, Electricity Generation Company Machupicchu - EGEMSA, J.T. FABRICANTES, and many personal works as well as participation in various academic events as an expositor and jury of projects.
Bechara (Besh) Saab - Crew Biologist/Health & Safety Officer (HSO)Bechara Saab is a neuroscientist of the University of Zürich and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. His PhD work with Prof. John Roder at Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto identified the first molecular link between intelligence and curiosity (1,2), revealed an unusual disruption of cognitive flexibility following treatment with a common Alzheimer’s disease medication (3), and established the first model of and pharmacological treatment for post-operative cognitive disorder (4). Using behavioral analysis, molecular neuroscience, fluorescent imaging, optogenetics and fMRI, Bechara’s current research examines the molecules and circuits within the brain that drive exploration, establish efficient learning, and facilitate resilience to stress-induced psychopathology. He is committed to the ethical treatment of animals, and has published two strategies that enable reduced animal usage for behavioral (5) and molecular (6) research. He is also highly committed to science communication (7) and has outlined steps required to ensure all school students receive face-to-face interaction with working researchers every year (8). Bechara regularly delivers public lectures on topics of exploration (9), the science of science communication (10), and the potential settlement of Mars (11). Bechara is a Brain & Behavior Research Foundation NARSAD Young Investigator (12), the inaugural recipient of the Canada Health Research Award for Mentorship (13), and holds a Ambizione research grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (14). He is editor of the interdisciplinary and open-access journal, Hypothesis (15), adviser for a Toronto-based EEG start-up, and an avid space enthusiast (16). Bechara skies, scuba dives, swims, surfs, composes music on the guitar and piano, and enjoys reading and writing while exploring the world alone with loved ones.
Johanna Hoyt - Crew GeologistJohanna Hoyt is 25 years old, and was born in the Philippines while her family was stationed overseas. Since then she has moved to a variety of locations on the east and west coasts of the United States. While completing a B.S. in geology at UCLA, she spent a field season studying Geomatics in Peru, and participating in conservation work at Macchu Picchu and Cuzco.
She has also completed a M.S. in Geology at UCLA. Her Master's Thesis focused on tectonics and sedimentary basins, specifically a palinspastic reconstruction of southern California to the beginning of the Miocene. During her graduate studies she was introduced to planetary research through iPLEX (UCLA Institute for Planets and Exoplanets) at UCLA. Questions of the origin of life and conditions for habitability on other plants have been a source of great interest for her. Johanna is currently working as a petroleum geologist for Aera Energy LLC in Bakersfield, California.
In addition to his professional career he is a private pilot, dive master, an open ocean/racing sailor including an Atlantic Ocean crossing, and an avid traveler. He has lived/traveled outside of the United States over a span of 5 years through more than 75 countries. He knows a smattering of languages that usually lend to him getting into more trouble than help.
He previously worked at NASA - JSC in the Extravehicular Activities (EVA) group where he trained astronauts on the space suit and the space suit systems on both the ISS and Space Shuttle. He also performed duties as an EVA flight control officer for numerous ISS and Space Shuttle missions.
Jay Berger - Crew EngineerJay is a native Texan where he earned a B.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas and a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Houston. He currently works at NASA - Johnson Space Center (JSC) as a specialist on the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS) and performs as a Russian Integration Officer in Mission Control.

Jimmy Urquhart - Crew JournalistI was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. My love for photography began after a head injury in my teens left me without the dexterity in my hands and made it hard to communicate verbally for a time. My dad gave me his camera to use after a therapist suggested it would be good outlet for myself. I began my career in 1995 working as ski and snowboard photographer. Since then I have worked as a reporter, photo editor and photojournalist for newspapers in Wisconsin and Utah. I began shooting for international news services in 2010. My work is regularly published around the world. For three years in a row images of mine have been included in the top 100 photos of the year for Reuters and I was recently selected as the Photojournalist of the Year by the Utah News Photographer's Association.
