Purpose:
The objective of today's EVA was to take pictures and videos using the
GoPro attached to the Phantom Quadcopter ahead of an education and
outreach video production. The EVA destination was the Hanksville-Burpee
Quarry located at 12s 518395E 4250580N NAD27. Two crewmembers served as
on-foot photographer and videographer.
Narrative:
The EVA began at 10:22 am and consisted of a team of 4: Renee Garifi (EVA
Lead), Rebeca Rodriguez, Scott MacPhee and Romain Charles. The team
caravanned to the first waypoint and checked in with HabComm to verify
that 3/4 comms radios were functioning. We began the EVA with the
knowledge that Rebeca would be using earphones with no microphone as we
have only 3 working mics. While driving the ATVs in a line, Rebeca stayed
in position #3 so she could communicate using our team's defined hand
signals, having one person in front and one in back of her, should
anything have happened where she would need assistance. The distance
between the Hab and the quarry resulted in a radio comms loss between the
EVA team and the Hab at 10:48 am, something we had planned for and
expected because of the mountains causing radio interference.
Shortly after arriving to the quarry destination by ATV, the team climbed
to the first lookout point to begin filming the landscape with the
quadcopter camera. Following one initial flyby of the crew while taking
aerial footage, a bolt from one of the propellers came loose and the
quadcopter lost its hovering function, falling approximately 30 feet to
the rocks below.
Romain Charles lead a contingency search on foot to locate the propellers
and recover all equipment. In order to get back to the hab in a timely
manner, we ended our educational EVA with just still team photos and a
short hike to take in the scenery and interesting geological features of
the area.
