1

Time Slot:
unknown
Purpose:
sample collection and deployment scouting
Narrative:
Dale, Musilova, Reid and Staats departed on EVA1 between 10:15 and 10:30. The delay in departure was due to the state of the EVA suits. The majority of the 'new' EVA suits are broken and only partially operable. The 'old' suits operate fairly well but do not have matching numbered helmets and suits and thus delays are incurred when suiting up. In future EVA suit numbers will not be provided in EVA plans as these numbers are irrelevant.
A short exercise was conducted in advance of the planned but not carried out medical EVA. Following this the EVA crew set out to the southern waypoint and exited the road at a convenient location to scout out an area for potential rover deployment. All four crew members proceeded on foot and an excellent location for potential rover deployment was scouted. Additional areas were examined but this area proved the best one discovered in the morning portion of the EVA.
In order to return in time for lunch and due to the later departure it was decided to divide the EVA into two sessions. Thus, after returning to the HAB for lunch, Dale and Musilova continued north of the HAB to complete the EVA while the other EVAs went on as scheduled. Musilova had a very successful EVA, collecting a range of soil samples with which she is now working in the lab. Dale continued recon for ESA/OU for consulting before conducting hardware testing. Another excellent site for rover field-testing was found – pictures taken and a recorded walk-about of the area conducted for Reid and Staats.

Eva Number:

Eva Date:
Time Slot:
unknown
Purpose:
sample collection and rover configuration
Narrative:
EAV2 was comprised of two independent activities being carried out in the same location near the Hab. Reid and Staats conducted rover system setup and verification. This consisted of configuring the rover platform for future deployment by mounting HW such as a temperature sensors, cameras, IMU and laptop.
Srivastava completed the first sample collection from near the green hab under the scheduled EVA 2 this afternoon. She walked around and finalized a location towards the East. It was devoid of any vegetation. As planned, she dug in the selected location for collecting two sets of soil samples a) approximately 5 cm below the surface, and b) approximately 10 cm below the surface. It took her nearly one hour and fifteen minutes to complete the task. There was little restricted mobility during the task of digging in and collecting samples with the space suit, helmet and the gloves on. Unfortunately the helmet disconnected from the backpack and it was difficult to reconnect during the EVA. She has marked the location with a marker and will make sure it is removed before she leaves simulation.
