Purpose:

The purpose of this EVA is to find points where extra-terrestrial life could exist. Japanese kids, based on meteorological and topographical prediction, preselected these points. EVA route is RSRS007, then RS001A via ATV. If we have time left, then RS002.

Narrative:

At each site, the crew made careful observations and surveyed natural features of the area in more detail. We used a photogrammetry system for topographical field survey; it is composed of a single-lens reflex camera, a tripod, and a spherical panoramic tripod head. We take at least 8 photos in each of the selected-points. We counted up plants and animals in a 1x1 square meter area, and also took soil samples for IVA.

The EVA started with an engineering check by Victor Luo and Yusuke Murakami. Heidi Beemer checked the ATVs and strapped the gear on them. Because of ATV4’s poor engine condition, our departure was delayed by around 5 minutes.

We headed to RS007 waypoint via ATV, and then via walking. We completed observations on RS007 and started moving to RS001A. Today, we tested a laptop GPS navigation system by connecting an external GPS antenna to a Mac laptop serial USB port with Mac GPS Pro software. This system was used for snow vehicle navigation in a previous Japanese Antarctica Research Expedition. Because of our large gloves, we used a stylus to operate the mouse pad and the system worked well. However, the helmet fogged up and obstructed our view and it made it difficult to find the mouse pointer on the laptop screen. We must use a big pointer mode on Mars. It took us a long time to navigate, so we gave up on site RS002.

This EVA is the last EVA for Yusuke Murakami’s (Crew Biologist) science outreach project. We couldn’t complete some of the missions out of his preselected research sites, but we retrieved sufficient observation and documentation of the exploration. These records will be shown at an exhibition and a workshop in Japan after proper editing.
