Purpose:

Soil moisture project: increase the spatial coverage

Narrative:

Today Crew Engineer Victor Luo and Crew Scientist Juho Vehviläinen did a two-hour long EVA. The purpose of this EVA was to get more data for the soil moisture project. See more in science report from the same day.

In the beginning of the EVA Crew Engineer Victor Luo did the engineering checks. Also, we filled the outer water tank.

We left the Hab with a visiting reporter from KSL-TV at 1001. Using two ATVs we propagated to our first field site (WP1) about 2 kilometers away from the Hab. We had the pleasure of being filmed while doing soil moisture measurements near WP1. In the beginning of the transect comms to the Hab were not too good, however, when we continued the transect to Easterly direction we had direct line of sight to the Hab and consequently clear communications.

The second field (WP2) site was 0.5 kilometers away towards North from the first site (WP1). When arriving to the second site we did not have comms with the Hab. Victor drove back to the last known location of good comms and notified the Hab about the situation. After the comms check, the ATVs were parked next to the road and our second transect of soil moisture measurements commenced, this time to Westerly direction. We acquired comms with the Hab shortly (100 meters to West) after starting the transect and the were able to keep the good comms for the most part of the time.

At 12001 we departed from the WP2 back to the Hab and arrived at 1209 just to see the reporter leave the premises.

Overall the EVA went well and the scientific objectives were fulfilled. The comms were mostly working fine. The only issue was with fogging of the helmet visor. Approximately 50% of the field of view was blocked while walking.
