Eva Number:

8

Eva Date:

25-11-2014

Time Slot:

laterAM

Purpose:

Engineering checks, trial of installing panels on observatory tunnel.

We will be keeping within 50 meters of the Hab.

Narrative:

The EVA was originally planned for Paul K, Ian and Claude-Michel. As the Paris Match reporters were present, and as it was found to be more effective communicating with them in French, our 3 French speakers proceeded on EVA: Alexandre, Ian and Claude-Michel. They requested a fourth member on EVA for crew photos. As the impact on crew activities was minor, Anastasia joined the EVA.

Engineering checks were performed around the Hab, see the Engineering Report. Standing water was once again observed on the South side of the Hab.

The rovers were started up as part of a daily check. Rover 4 blue was found to stall and was difficult to use. The battery was low and it had trouble starting. This will be explored tomorrow and an attempt will be made to charge the battery.

22 panels were transported to the tunnel between the Green hab and the observatory. The panels were easy enough to manipulate while wearing space suits, and tunnel construction will proceed in following EVAs as planned.

During the rest of the EVA, the French reporters took pictures of the crew at various locations West of the Hab, between the Hab and the road.

A single crew member experienced difficulties with their radio headset. To avoid earpieces falling out, the headsets are taped to the crew’s skin. The tape often fails to adhere for the whole duration of the EVA, which was the case reported here.
