Purpose:

Sample collection and sample scouting.

Narrative:

Crew scientists Musilova and Srivastava went for their EVA 1 as planned at around 1400 hrs today.

Srivastava collected more test sample from the location 1 where she went on her first EVA. The sample collected from the same site on her first EVA gave 11% of water in the sample nearly 5cm below the surface and 8% of water in the sample nearly 10 cm below the surface. So, today nearly 2 kg of sample was collected from the same location at about 5 cm below the surface. Taking test samples of minimum 500 g, the soil will be put in her water extraction equipment. She will run the experiment with these samples to verify the percentage of water the equipment is able to extract. She also collected some amount of snow as she needs cold water for the condenser in the equipment, facilitating the use of in-situ resource, keeping in mind that the water in the hab is limited for limited purposes.

Musilova started one of her transects and collected several very useful samples. She also scouted terrain for further sampling. She hasn’t found any endoliths yet, but will go scouting for them tomorrow during an EVA.

Today’s EVA was a good test for communicating between the crew on the EVA and the hab. Despite the very hilly terrain they communicated really well with each other on the radio and made sure that they were always in the line of sight of each other. Suit #1 and Suit #3 were used for this EVA. The backpack and helmet were very comfortable this time as our crew engineer Sue Ann spent a substantial amount of time this morning cleaning and repairing the suits.
